There's a thread on High Table at FA that asks: Severus Snape - straight, gay or bi?
WTF?
This was my reply.
What's the real question?
First, I think Snape lends himself particularly well to slash, simply because this has the potential to double the inner and outer conflict for dramatic purposes.
I personally write him straight, or asexual, because it's more canon for me, and I have this obsession to write as canonically as possible, despite the fact that I have written him in sexual situations with both men and women.
However, I think something more lies beyond this question. The question of Snape's sexual orientation is kind of by-the-by - is it really important?
I'd say that the real issues are how he deals with his emotions and urges. By asking ouselves about this, we might get closer to understanding the character, or at least parts of him (no pun intended), which is ultimately far more interesting to the discerning reader than "does he fancy men or women, or both?"
I think pondering over his preferences, therefore, detracts from the real issues.

Exploring sexuality is one thing. I write him het, I write him slightly slashy (haven't quite got there, yet), but the point is, is it important? Is it? No. The character is important. OK, it's part of his character. But is it a big part of his character? No. It's a plot device. His penis and where he puts it is a plot device.
I'm ranting.
OK, I need choc.

And I just realized that I've never actually pondered the question of Snape's sexuality because I've been hard put to see him in an actual relationship with anyone.

LOL. No it's not something you hear every day.
I'd better expand on what I mean by this. Well, not 'better': 'want'.
A lot of people write Snape & Sex because of Rickman. And why not? Perhaps this is where the 'is he straight, gay bi' comes in.
The majority of my fics place Snape is sexual situations. This is because I thought, consciously, what is the maximum grief I can give him, to get him to perform at his best in my fics? Like you, I have trouble with the issue. Snape & Sex (unless with Rickman fantasies in mind, and therefore not canon) is difficult to write. But that's the challenge, isn't it? I use Snape's penis, therefore, as a device - other people want it, or don't want it, for example Narcissa in 'Sins' wants to use his penis to control him, in 'Party Night' they all want him to give it up in order for him to prove he's with them. Ergo, it's a plot device.
This doesn't quite fit with '20/20', where his penis isn't mentioned once, but we're in a sexual situation over which he has no control: it's Black's penis in that tale, but used by me in the same way.
So the question 'is he gay, bi, straight' is redundant, when you consider the possibilities for plot that do more than scratch the surface.
*ponders*
I can't believe I'm on a rant about Snape's willy. I'm beginning to worry about myself ...
